The history of the Lithuanian State Wind Instrument Orchestra "Trimitas" started in 1957, when it was founded as the ensemble of the Vilnius Central Culture and Recreation Park by the composer and conductor Vitas Žilius. V. Aleksa, M. Tamošiūnas, L. Čiapas, R. Pašiūnas and R. Petraitis conducted the orchestra in different periods. Each of them contributed to the orchestra’s growth and activity.
Since 1964, when Romas Balčiūnas took the conductor’s baton, the orchestra’s professional mastery has developed quickly. Due to the extraordinary energy and talent of this artist, the orchestra became the main wind instrument orchestra in Lithuania within several years. In 1966, it was given the impressive title "Trimitas", and in 1971, it was granted the status of the state musical organization. Since then the orchestra has become an inseparable part of our musical culture.
The orchestra consists of wind instruments, a choreographic group and solo vocalists. The orchestra gives concerts of classical and entertaining music as well as spectacular parades. Not a single large festival in Lithuania can do without "Trimitas", and during the last decade, most of prestigious musical events in Europe and around the world. Several decades ago, the orchestra was a frequent guest of the most prestigious concert halls and famous festivals in Russia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. Now its tours reach the halls of Western Europe more often: it has given concerts in Italy, Luxemburg, Norway, Finland and Germany; it has received awards in the international wind instrument orchestra festivals in England, Holland, Sweden and France. The reason for such an international success has been the high professional level of the orchestra, its varied and interesting repertoire, remarkable and spectacular performance and the untiring soul of the orchestra conductor, maestro Romas Balčiūnas, the winner of the European Conductors’ Competition in Germany in 1994.
Every year "Trimitas" offers an original repertoire to the audience: march-parades, classical, sacral and contemporary music. Composers B. Dvarionas, E. Balsys, J.Juzeliūnas, J. and V. Juozapaitis, F. Bajoras, J. Tamulionis, A. Bražinskas, R.Žigaitis, T. Makačinas, M. Tamošiūnas, K. Daugėla, T. Adomavičius, R.Giedraitis have created original opuses for the orchestra that promotes Lithuanian music. The composers B. Gorbulskis, J. Navakauskas and A. Raudonikis have prepared several programmes with the orchestra. Most renowned Lithuanian and international soloists, conductors and composers from England, Germany, Holland and Sweden perform together with "Trimitas".
"Trimitas" has recorded its abundant repertoire in 12 records, nine audio tapes and nine CDs. More than 200 opuses could be found in the collection of Lithuanian Radio. The orchestra has been often invited to participate in programmes produced by Lithuanian Television.
Since 1992, the orchestra has been led by: Prof. Algirdas Budrys, art director, Romualdas Barvainis, director, Romas Balčiūnas, conductor in chief, and conductors – Kazys Daugėla, composer-arranger, Ugnius Vaiginis and Julius Černius; Dalia Marcišauskienė, the leader of the choreographic group.
By courtesy of maestro R. Balčiūnas and Prof. A. Budrys, "Trimitas" has become a stable ensemble known all over the world; it has a rich repertoire and demonstrates an original manner of performance, aspired to by all wind instrumentalists in our country.
