The Vilniaus Arsenalas Ensemble was founded in 1986. In 1987 it took the name of the former Arsenal of Vilnius when a museum of applied art was opened in the newly restored complex of the former arsenal. The group began to appear in this place on a regular basis. Soon the concerts in the museum became traditional, and the ensemble became connected with this historical place not just by name.
The ensemble has given more than 900 concerts in various Lithuanian cities and towns. It also often participates in international projects that take place in Lithuania. Thus in 1996 it took part in the project, Baroque Way in Lithuania; in 1997 it gave concerts within a framework of Vilnius Baroque Week; and in the autumn of the same year it participated in the special cultural programme, Baroque Sundays. Also in 1996-1997 the ensemble gave concerts within the cycle, “The Baroque Music Afternoon”, in the Vilnius Picture Gallery. In 1997 the ensemble played in the Baroque week for children. Also it held special concerts in the Lithuanian Art Museum. Since the Autumn of 1997, it has also participated yearly in the Great Parade of Musicians organised by the Lithuanian Union of Musicians. In 1998 Vilniaus Arsenalas took part in some projects of the European Council – Lithuanian Wooden Baroque and Lithuanian Monasteries; it also participated in the Week in the Monasteries of Vilnius in the Days of European Legacy in Lithuania. In addition, it had a special programme of its own – namely, Music in the Estates of Lithuania. It was within the framework of this project that the ensemble released its first CD, “Music in the Art Galleries of Lithuania”. In 1999 they began a new project entitled “Music in the Historical Parks of Lithuania”; in 2001 – „Music and Architecture“; in 2002 – „Music in Lithuanian architecture ensembles“; in 2003 – „Music – in integral aristocratic culture system”. In 1999 and 2000 Vilniaus Arsenalas was invited to give concerts at the Pazaislis Music Festival.
In recent years the group also toured Latvija, Estonia, Poland, The Netherlands, France, and Germany. The ensemble also participated in the contemporary music festivals „ Gaida“ (1999); „Muzikos Ruduo“(2002); and “Is Arti” (2003).
The repertoire of Vilniaus Arsenalas consists of works by 17th to 20th century Western European Composers, and Lithuanian contemporary music.

Vilniaus Arsenalas — perfectly performs baroque music by Telemann, Rameau, Leclair, and Bach family. It has perfectly fulfilled the Western European masterpieces of baroque era. The musicians are expressing a clear and expedient energy, on the one hand, and demonstrating a magnificent unanimity, which could be achieved only through highest mastery and professionalism that enables to take obstacles without any effort, on the other.
Lithuanian ensemble Vilniaus Arsenalas could be presented under the title ‘small yet fine’.
The timbres of the instruments of the Vilniaus arsenalas as if emphasised the major features of baroque: splendour, refinery, symbolism. Luxuriant, yet rather cold timbre of flute combined with the rich, although temperate voice of viola. The sound of this duet was ‘stuck’ by silver tones of cembalo.
The ensemble plays baroque and modern music with feeling of style and impressiveness.
The music kept flowing freely and the performers had a good feeling of each other. They convincingly succeeded in rendering the individual creative features of each composer. Dignity and laconicism marked the performance of Telemann’s music. The works by C. Ph. E. Bach were coloured with light mood, warmth and affectionate expression. While listening to the performance of Rameau’s composition one could hear an elegant, playful, and fragile melodic meanders supported with bizarre melismatic ornamentation.
The peak of the concert was the performance of Concerto No. 3 by J. Ph. Rameau. The listeners bathed themselves in the warm expressive rays of the composition so masterfully performed by three musicians.
