In 2010 a chamber orchestra was created at the music faculty of Vytautas Magnus University by the initiative of students and Robertas Bliškevičius (lecturer and head of strings). Initially it was made up of students and so as its members became professional musicians, so did the collective - it is now the only professional chamber orchestra in Kaunas. The objective of creating the orchestra was to gather a generation of talented musicians into a single collective that could represent Lithuania, Kaunas, and the university in the country and abroad.
The very first concerts showed that the idea had paid off. The orchestra was immediately recognised and loved by the public for its musical enthusiasm, honest and professional performances. In a very short amount of time the orchestra started receiving financial support from Vytautas Magnus University and began to represent it officially.
The repertoire of the orchestra contains many different styles and genres. Along with classical music the orchestra is open to experiments and gladly takes on new projects - concerts with Lithuania’s premier jazz musicians in the international festival Autumn of Music together with Liudas Mockūnas (saxophone), performances with modern dance groups (dance theatre Aura). A large number of performances include modern Lithuanian music - inspired by the performances, Lithuanian composers write special pieces by commission of the orchestra. Some works are dedicated exclusively to this orchestra.
The Vytautas Magnus University Chamber Orchestra also has partners abroad. It has worked with event organisers from Germany, Norway, Cyprus, Italy. The orchestra has performed in famous international festivals taking place in Lithuania - Pažaislis Music Festival, festival for composers E. Grieg and M. K. Čiurlionis, Autumn of Music, Operetta in Kaunas Castle. It has also performed abroad - in the autumn of 2012 they went on their first international concert tour, participating in the Euro-Mediterranean Youth Music Expo 2012 in Cyprus, which was organised to showcase talented artists from Europe and the Middle East. In July of 2013 the orchestra debuted in the prestigious Schlezwig-Holstein festival in Germany.
In the autumn of 2013 the orchestra released their first CD recording Ekspresija. Short term plans include a second recording and continued performances in Lithuania’s music festivals.
