The idea to found the ensemble was born in 1999, when during the International Accordion and Bayan Music Festival in Chelyabinsk (Russia) two accordion duos performed together a composition: Eduardas Gabnys and Genadijus Savkovas (Lithuania); Vladimir Ushakov and Sergei Likhachov (Russia). Soon the musicians were joined by the Latvian performer Svetlana Stavickaja who is, like the accordionists from Russia, the soloist of the St. Petersburg  Musette Ensemble. The several years of creative collaboration have been rich in significant events. The ensemble has given concerts in Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Byelorussia, Italy, Germany and Finland. It has been participating in international festivals in St. Petersburg, Minsk, Vilnius, Šiauliai and Daugavpils. In 2002 the quintet had an extremely successful concert tour in Europe that lasted one and a half month.

Since 2003, the musicians of the quintet have been performing with accordions made by the company Excelsior especially for them. The name of the ensemble is related to this event: since 2003, it has been the Baltic International Accordion Quintet Excelsior.
The years 2002 and 2003 were marked with particular success in the quintet’s history: the ensemble participated and won several awards in two international accordion competitions in Italy: the first prize in the category of classical music (2003); the second prize in the variety music category (2002) and third prize in the category of music by Astor Piazzola (2002) in the international accordion competition Citta di Castelfidardo; the first prize in the chamber music category (2002) in the international accordion competition Citta di Lanciano.
The quintet’s repertoire includes arrangements of classical music, opuses by contemporary composers such as A. Piazzola, L.Anderson, F.Poulenc, as well as compositions of popular music written specifically for this ensemble. The quintet has recorded three compact disks.
