Awards mark World Theatre Day

On March 27, World Theatre Day, the "Golden Crosses of the Stage" Awards took place at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre to honor the most deserving theatre artists of the last theatre season.

The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania stages the award ceremony each year to mark best works in the last theatre season and cash prizes are given to the winners. The “Golden Cross of the Stage” award was first given in 2004 when it replaced the "Christopher" award that had been given since 1995.

In the category of opera the “Golden Cross of the Stage” Award was delivered to soloist Sandra Janušaitė (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre). The award was bestowed to the singer for the role of Tatyana in P. Tchaikovsky’s opera "Eugene Onegin" - this role is recognized as the best in the genre of opera in 2012 in Lithuania. The premiere of "Eugene Onegin" at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre took place in May 2012 (director Vasily Barkhatov, music director and conductor Robertas Šervenikas).

The award in the genre of operetta and musical was bestowed to the soloist Akvilė Garbenčiūtė (Kaunas State Musical Theatre) for the role of Rose in the musical revue "Siegfried Werner Cabaret".

In September 2013 Sandra Janušaitė signed a two-year contract and became a soloist of the Essen Opera Theatre in Germany (Aalto-Musiktheater).
