The birth of Kaunas Big Band is closely linked to the dawn of the restoration of the Independence of Lithuania. Over more than twenty-five years of its existence, Kaunas Big Band has become a significant leader of the city's jazz culture. The ensemble belongs to the concert institution “Kauno santaka” and it has always been in the center of the most important jazz music events. For a long time it has been the only municipal jazz orchestra and several generations already has considered Kaunas Big Band as a symbol of a live jazz school. Almost all the well-known masters of the Lithuanian jazz had creative clashes with Kaunas Big Band at some point of their career: Petras Vyšniauskas, Valerijus Ramoška, Vytautas Labutis, Saulius Šiaučiulis, Arvydas Jofė, Olegas Molokojedovas, Eugenijus Kanevičius, Arkadijus Gotesmanas, Pavelas Giunteris, Vytautas Mikeliūnas, Vytautas Grubliauskas, Liudas Mockūnas, Neda Malūnavičiūtė and others.
The main goal of Kaunas Big Band is the professional jazz and its promotion. One of Big Band‘s creators, pianist Romualdas Grabštas (1943 – 2009), has been persistently attributing this provision to the Big Band. The themes of the Big Band musical projects cover a wide musical range: starting from such projects as“Konrado džiazo klubas”, “Drum Show”, “From Jazz to Blues”, “K+M+B JAZZ” (Jazz of the Three Kings), “Jazz & Breakdance show”, “Samba Del Gringo”, “Šokiai! Gros džiazas!” which were prepared by Romualdas Grabštas, a long-time conductor of the Big Band, and ending with educational programs that are being developed to this day.
The music of Kaunas Big Band can be heard in prestigious concert halls and multi-thousand seat arenas, the soloists who play together with the Big Band are jazz musicians of the highest class, as well as pop music and estrada singers. This band is a must-attribute to the Lithuanian annual jazz festivals – Kaunas Jazz, Klaipėda Castle Jazz Festival, Šiauliai Big Band Festival; Kaunas Big Band has been playing at Birštonas Festival since the first year of the festival. The orchestra has hosted a number of memorable concerts and presented to the audience many world-class music celebrities: Jukka Linkola, Eero Koivistoinen (Finland), Barbara Dennerlein (Germany), Daniel Messina (Argentina), Frank Mantooth, Randy Brecker, Jiggs Whigham (USA), Arkadij Šilkloper (Russia), Henk Meutgeert (the Netherlands), Richard Galliano (France), Lasse Lindgren (Sweden), Bob Mintzer (USA) and others. Together with the above-mentioned performers Kaunas Big Band also traveled to many foreign countries with the tours in Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Belarus, Poland, Russia.
