The Accordion Duo Eduardas Gabnys and Gennady Savkov has been playing already for more than twenty five years. Both musicians graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and started to perform (solo at the beginning) still while at the Academy. Since 1978 they have been playing together. 1983-1986 the duo attended master classes at Kiev Conservatoire with the professors N.Rizol, J.Yashkevich and N.Davydov. In 1989 the duo was awarded the second prize at the International Accordion Competition, the category of chamber ensembles in Klingenthal (Germany). In 1994 the duo won diplomas at two international competitions Premio Internazionale Astor Piazzolla and Citta di Castelfidardo in Italy, Castelfidardo, at once. Besides, the musicians have been playing with Excelsior accordions made especially for them in Castelfidardo.
The duo’s repertory is rich and varied, it includes great arrangements of classical music (most of them adapted by the musicians themselves), original contemporary compositions for accordion, exciting traditional entertainment music. There are also opuses by Lithuanian composers created specifically for the duo: J. Tamulionis, V. Juozapaitis, F. Bajoras, V. Bagdonas, V. Mikalauskas, A. Klova among them.
The duo is popular in Lithuania due to its high professionalism. However, they are performing not only in Lithuania. The duo has played in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Italy, Yugoslavia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Holland, Germany, Russia, Uruguay and many other countries. They have given around 900 concerts, they have recorded a gramophone record, a compact disc and four tapes and they have also recorded their music for Lithuanian Radio. The duo is organising and participating in traditional Vilnius accordion music festivals. Among the achievements of this ensemble is the fact that it was the first to acquaint Lithuanian audience with the work of Argentinean composer A. Piazzolla and helped to popularize his name in Lithuania. For the transcriptions of this composer’s opuses the duo was awarded a special prize at the A. Piazzolla competition in Italy.
